Yes, you can switch from Ozempic to Mounjaro in Bali, but only through a doctor. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is now registered in Indonesia for weight management, and a doctor can move you across if it suits your health history, your blood work and how you have done on Ozempic so far.
On Ozempic and thinking about Mounjaro?
Talk to a Boost doctor about whether switching makes sense for you, in Bali or Jakarta.
A lot of men who come to us in Bali are already on Ozempic, either from a doctor at home or from an earlier stay. Some have hit a plateau, some struggle with side effects, and some have simply read that Mounjaro works better. This guide explains what actually changes when you switch, who tends to be a good candidate, and how it works if you are only on the island for a few weeks.
Ozempic and Mounjaro: what is the actual difference?
Ozempic contains semaglutide. It copies one gut hormone, GLP-1, which slows stomach emptying, reduces appetite and helps control blood sugar.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. It acts on GLP-1 too, but also on a second hormone called GIP. That dual action is the main reason it tends to produce more weight loss for many people.
Both are weekly injections, both are prescription medicines, and both need a doctor to start, adjust and monitor them. They are not interchangeable pens, and the dose of one does not convert directly into a dose of the other.
Does Mounjaro work better than Ozempic?
For weight loss, the best evidence so far says yes, on average. In the SURMOUNT-5 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025, 751 adults with obesity were given either tirzepatide or semaglutide for 72 weeks. People on tirzepatide lost about 20% of their body weight on average, compared with about 14% on semaglutide.
Averages are not promises. Some people do very well on Ozempic and have no reason to change. Others respond less well to either drug. Your own response, side effects and health picture matter more than any trial headline. For a broader look at all three common options, see our comparison of Mounjaro vs Ozempic vs Wegovy.
Is Mounjaro available in Bali?
Yes. Indonesia’s food and drug authority, BPOM, granted tirzepatide marketing authorisation for type 2 diabetes in February 2026 and added weight management as an indication in July 2026, according to BPOM’s own announcement. You can check any product’s registration in BPOM’s public product database.
Being registered does not mean you can buy it over the counter. Mounjaro is a prescription medicine, and genuine pens come through a doctor and a licensed pharmacy. Pens sold through social media, marketplaces or “no prescription needed” sellers are a real risk, both for fakes and for poor cold storage. Our guide to getting Mounjaro in Bali safely covers what to look out for.
Who might switch from Ozempic to Mounjaro?
There is no single rule, but these are the situations where a doctor is most likely to consider it:
- Your weight loss has stalled on Ozempic despite consistent use, diet changes and enough time on treatment.
- Side effects are hard to live with on Ozempic. Some people tolerate Mounjaro differently, although nausea and stomach upset are common with both.
- You want to continue treatment while in Indonesia and Mounjaro is the better fit for your goals and health.
Switching is not automatically right if Ozempic is working well for you. A doctor will also check reasons not to use tirzepatide at all, such as a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers, a history of pancreatitis, or other conditions and medicines that need care.
What happens when you switch
A proper assessment first
The doctor will ask how long you have been on Ozempic, how you have responded, what side effects you have had and what other medicines you take. Bring your current pen or a photo of the label, and any recent blood results from home.
Blood work if needed
If you do not have recent results, the doctor may suggest a blood test covering blood sugar, HbA1c, kidney and liver function, and lipids. This gives a baseline before the change.
A fresh start on the new medicine
Because Mounjaro and Ozempic are different molecules, your doctor does not simply carry your Ozempic dose across. Mounjaro is normally started low and increased step by step, with the doctor deciding when and how far to go. Your doctor will also tell you exactly when to stop Ozempic and start Mounjaro. Do not plan the switch yourself or overlap the two.
Follow-up
The first weeks after a switch are when side effects are most likely, so a check-in matters. That can be in person in Bali or Jakarta, or by message if you are travelling. If you are starting treatment in Jakarta for the first time, our guide to starting GLP-1 treatment in Jakarta walks through each step.
Switching during a short stay in Bali
If you are visiting for a few weeks, tell the doctor your dates up front. Switching shortly before you fly home is not always sensible, because your doctor at home may not continue Mounjaro, or may not be able to get it. In some cases it is better to stay on Ozempic for the trip and discuss Mounjaro with your regular doctor.
If you do switch and plan to take pens home, check the rules for where you are going. Australians should read Smartraveller’s advice for Indonesia and the TGA’s information on entering Australia with medicines. Keep pens in their original packaging with a copy of your prescription, and plan for keeping them cold.

Quick answers
Can I swap my Ozempic pen for a Mounjaro pen at a Bali pharmacy?
No. Mounjaro needs a prescription, and the switch should be planned by a doctor who knows your history.
Is Mounjaro stronger than Ozempic?
On average it has produced more weight loss in a head-to-head trial, but that does not mean it is the right choice for everyone. Your doctor weighs your response, side effects and health first.
Will the side effects be the same?
They are similar in type. Nausea, stomach discomfort and changes in bowel habits are the most common with both. How you personally react can differ between the two.
Can tourists switch to Mounjaro in Bali?
Yes, after a consultation with a doctor. Tell the doctor how long you are staying and what treatment you can get at home, because that affects whether switching now makes sense.
