Starting GLP-1 treatment in Jakarta takes three steps: a consultation with a doctor, a set of blood tests, and regular follow-up once you begin. Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy all need a doctor’s assessment and prescription before they are started.
Starting GLP-1 treatment in Jakarta?
Book a doctor’s consultation and blood tests, or ask us a question on WhatsApp first.
This guide walks through what each step involves, what the doctor will want to know, and what the first months of treatment usually look like. If you are still deciding between medicines, our comparison of Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy explains how they differ.
Who GLP-1 treatment is for
GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) reduce appetite and slow down how quickly the stomach empties. They are used for weight management in men living with obesity, or men who are overweight and also have a weight-related problem such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure or raised cholesterol.
They are not the right fit for everyone. A doctor will usually not start a GLP-1 medicine if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or a condition called MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, or certain gall bladder and stomach problems. That is why the consultation always comes first.
Step 1: the first consultation
The first appointment is a conversation about your health, not a sales pitch. Expect the doctor to ask about:
- Your weight history and what you have already tried
- Current medicines and supplements, including anything for diabetes, blood pressure or testosterone
- Past illnesses, especially of the pancreas, gall bladder, kidneys or thyroid
- Family history of thyroid cancer
- Alcohol intake, sleep and how active you are
- What you want from treatment, and how long you will be in Jakarta
The doctor will also check your weight, waist measurement and blood pressure. Bring a list of your medicines and any blood results from the last six months, because recent results can sometimes save you repeating tests.
If you already use a GLP-1 medicine prescribed elsewhere, bring the prescription or the pen packaging. The doctor can then decide whether to continue the same medicine or adjust the plan.
Step 2: blood work before you start
Blood tests give the doctor a baseline and pick up anything that would change the plan. A typical pre-treatment panel includes:
- HbA1c and fasting glucose, to check for prediabetes or diabetes
- Lipid panel, covering cholesterol and triglycerides
- Liver function
- Kidney function (creatinine and eGFR), because dehydration from side effects can put strain on the kidneys
- Thyroid function (TSH)
- Testosterone, for men who also have low energy, low libido or trouble building muscle
Several of these need a short fast beforehand, so a morning appointment is easiest. Results usually come back within a day or two. Our blood tests in Jakarta page explains how booking works.
Testosterone is on the list because low testosterone and excess weight often go together in men. If your level is low, the doctor may talk through treating both at the same time, with each monitored through regular blood tests.
Step 3: starting the medicine
Once your results have been reviewed, the doctor explains which medicine suits you and why. Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy are all once-weekly injections given with a pre-filled pen into the skin of the stomach or thigh. You are shown how to use the pen at the clinic, so the first injection is not something you have to work out alone. The details of how our doctors manage this are on the GLP-1 treatment in Jakarta page.
Every GLP-1 medicine is started low and stepped up gradually over the first weeks to months. Your doctor decides each step based on how well you are tolerating it. Moving faster than planned tends to make side effects worse without improving results.
Only use genuine pens
Use only pens prescribed by a doctor and supplied by a licensed pharmacy or clinic. Pens sold through social media or online marketplaces may be counterfeit or may have been stored at the wrong temperature. You can check whether a medicine is registered in Indonesia using BPOM’s official product database.
Step 4: follow-up during the first months
Follow-up is where treatment is actually managed. In the first few months, a check-in roughly every four weeks is common, covering:
- Changes in weight and waist measurement
- Side effects, especially nausea, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea
- How much you are eating, and whether you are getting enough protein
- Whether to move to the next step or stay where you are
Some check-ins can happen over WhatsApp, with an in-person visit when the doctor needs to examine you or repeat blood tests. Blood work is usually repeated after a few months to see how blood sugar, cholesterol and liver markers have changed.
Protein intake and strength training matter more on a GLP-1 medicine than most men expect, because fast weight loss can take muscle with it. Our article on GLP-1 medicines and muscle loss explains how to limit that.
Side effects to know about
Most side effects are digestive and are most noticeable after starting or after each step up. They often ease within a few weeks. Contact your doctor promptly if you have:
- Severe stomach pain that does not go away, sometimes spreading to the back
- Vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down
- Pain in the upper right abdomen, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Signs of dehydration such as dizziness or passing very little urine
Jakarta’s heat makes it easy to become dehydrated when you are eating and drinking less than usual, so keep your water intake up, particularly in the first weeks.
How long treatment lasts
GLP-1 medicines work while you take them. Many people regain weight after stopping, especially if they stop suddenly without lasting changes to eating and activity. Your doctor will discuss a longer-term plan with you, including when and how to come off treatment. Our guide to stopping Ozempic covers what to expect.
Moving between Jakarta and Bali
If you split your time between cities, treatment can continue in either one. Boost Health Clinic has doctors in both, so your records and plan carry over. See our GLP-1 treatment in Bali page if you will spend part of your treatment there, and the medical weight loss overview for how the programme works as a whole. Unopened pens need to be kept in the fridge, so plan how you will keep them cool when you travel.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to see a doctor to get Mounjaro or Ozempic in Jakarta?
Yes. A doctor needs to assess you and prescribe the medicine before you start, and should stay involved while you are on it.
How soon can I start after the first visit?
Usually as soon as your blood results are back and have been reviewed, which is often within a few days of the consultation.
Can I start if I am only in Jakarta for a short time?
Tell the doctor your plans at the first visit. Starting makes most sense when you can keep up follow-up, in person or remotely, and continue treatment after you leave.
Will GLP-1 treatment affect my testosterone?
Losing excess weight is often linked with better testosterone levels in men. If you are already on TRT, tell the doctor, as both treatments are monitored with blood tests.
