Treatment with testosterone (TRT) has a long history starting with early medical discoveries about hormones and the effects they have on the body. TRT was come to the lime light with the help of modern science, but it started back centuries ago. This article explains the history of testosterone replacement therapy, from the discovery of testosterone to where we are now with massive use in medical care.
Early Understanding of Testosterone
The idea that the balls played a role in male health and vitality dates back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks and Egyptians, thought that testicular function was tied to masculinity and strength. Some old books suggest that parts of animal testicles were used in during medical practises in history, but they didn’t know what they were doing.
The discovery of testosterone (19th-20th century)
The first important scientific discovery regarding testosterone happened in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
1889 – the French physiologist Charles Eduard Brown Ceredard experienced an injection with extracts from the animal’s testes. He said it boosted his life, but his results were later considered unreliable.
1927 – German scientists made the basis for the separation of testosterone and determined the substances in the extract of test circle that affected male characteristics.
1935 – Testosterone was successfully isolated by scientists Ernst Lakel, Adolf Buttenant and Leopold Luzicskaya. This discovery was the start for the production of synthetic testosterone, revolutionizing hormone therapy.
The introduction of testosterone therapy
After the isolation of testosterone in 1935, medical uses quickly followed:
1939 – Synthetic testosterone was first used to treat medical conditions such as hypogonadism (low testosterone production) and delayed puberty.
1940-1950s – Athletes and bodybuilders started to experiment with testosterone to improve body performance.
1960-1970 TRT was not a popular treatment, but was seen as a treatment for age-related decline in testosterone.
The Modern era of TRT
From the 1990s to the early 2000s, TRT became more accepted and affordable:
- The outcome of the delivery method is innovations such as testosterone injections, gels, stains, granules, and more, making it very practical and effective.
- Medical Perception – This study confirmed the benefits of TRT, improved energy, sex drive, muscle mass and mood in men with low testosterone levels.
- Regulatory Recommendations – Healthcare organizations have developed guidelines to ensure the purpose and the right and right.
