Short answer: Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) are sold in Bali, but they are prescription medicines, so the legal way to buy them is from a licensed pharmacy with a prescription from an Indonesian doctor. Buying them over the counter, from a street seller or as a “herbal” stamina product is where travellers run into legal and safety problems.

Is Viagra over the counter in Bali?
No. Indonesia’s Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) classifies sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, as obat keras, a prescription medicine that should only be used under a doctor’s supervision. BPOM says so directly in its public warning on male stamina products.
The Australian Government gives travellers the same message from the other direction. Its Smartraveller advice for Indonesia states that buying medication classified as prescription only in Indonesia without a valid prescription from an Indonesian doctor is illegal.
Two practical points follow from that:
- A prescription from your GP in Australia, the UK or Europe is useful medical history, but it is not an Indonesian prescription.
- If a shop or a street seller is willing to hand over tablets without a prescription, that does not make the purchase legal, and it tells you nothing about what is in the tablets.
Why “no questions asked” tablets are a risk
Sildenafil and tadalafil regularly turn up where they should not be. BPOM publishes regular lists of stamina products that secretly contain drug ingredients. In its early 2026 findings, the agency reported herbal stamina products containing undeclared sildenafil, and a supplement containing both sildenafil and tadalafil.
The problem with an undeclared or unverified product is simple: you do not know the ingredient, the amount or the quality. BPOM warns that sildenafil taken without medical oversight can cause unstable blood pressure, heart complications and dangerous interactions with other medicines.
That matters on holiday more than at home. Heat, dehydration, alcohol and long days all put extra load on your circulation. If you would like to understand that link better, read our article on alcohol and erectile dysfunction.
How to check a product is genuine
BPOM asks consumers to do a “Cek KLIK” before buying any medicine: check the packaging (Kemasan), the label, the registration number (Izin edar) and the expiry date (Kedaluwarsa). You can look up a registration number yourself on cekbpom.pom.go.id.
In practice, for a traveller:
- Buy only from a licensed pharmacy (apotek), not a minimarket counter, a beach stall or a social media seller.
- Expect sealed, branded packaging with a BPOM registration number, a batch number and an expiry date.
- Be wary of loose tablets, opened blister strips and “herbal Viagra”.
- Treat a seller who discourages a prescription as a warning sign.
How to get Viagra or Cialis legally in Bali
The process is straightforward and does not need to be awkward.
1. Speak to a doctor licensed in Indonesia
At Boost Health Clinic this starts with a private consultation, in English, in person or by telemedicine. The doctor will ask about your symptoms, your general health, your heart and blood pressure history and every medicine you take. Our erectile dysfunction service explains what the assessment covers.
2. Get assessed, not just supplied
These medicines are not suitable for every man. They can interact with other medication, including nitrates used for chest pain and some blood pressure treatments, which is why a doctor has to review your history first. Whether treatment is appropriate, which medicine and how it is taken are decisions for the doctor after that assessment.
Erection problems can also be an early sign of something else, such as low testosterone, diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Where it makes sense, the doctor may suggest a men’s health blood test rather than only treating the symptom.
3. Receive a prescription and genuine medication
If treatment is appropriate, the doctor issues an Indonesian prescription. The Viagra and Cialis our doctors prescribe are BPOM registered. Full details of how this works locally are on our Viagra and Cialis in Bali page, and men based in the capital can use the same service through Viagra and Cialis in Jakarta.
Viagra or Cialis: which is right for a trip?
Both belong to the same family of medicines and work by improving blood flow in response to arousal. The main practical difference is how long each one stays active, which changes how men tend to use them.
We cover this in more detail in how often you can take Viagra and in our guide to daily tadalafil. Your doctor will recommend one based on your health, your other medication and what you want from treatment, not on what a pharmacy happens to have on the shelf.
Bringing your own ED medication to Bali
If you already have a prescription at home, bringing your own supply is often the simplest option. Smartraveller advises travellers to Indonesia to:
- carry a copy of the prescription and a doctor’s letter naming the medicine, the dosage and that it is for personal use;
- bring only enough for the length of the stay;
- keep it in the original packaging.
The same rules apply to other prescription medicines. Our guide to bringing prescription medication into Bali walks through the paperwork step by step.
If you run out during a longer stay, do not top up from an unverified source. See a doctor here and get a local prescription.
Taking medication back to Australia
Australians who are prescribed medication in Bali should check the rules before flying home. The Office of Drug Control’s guidance on travelling to Australia with medicines sets out the traveller’s exemption, including a limit of three months’ supply, keeping medicine in its original packaging with the dispensing label, carrying a prescription or doctor’s letter, and being ready to declare it to the Australian Border Force.
Read that page yourself before you travel, because the conditions are specific and can change. Keep your Indonesian prescription and the clinic’s letter with the medication.
Common questions
Can I use my Australian prescription at a Bali pharmacy?
Smartraveller refers specifically to a valid prescription from an Indonesian doctor. Bring your home prescription to your consultation, as it helps the doctor here, but expect to need a local one.
Can I get a prescription without visiting a clinic in person?
Our doctors offer telemedicine consultations across Indonesia, so many men in Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud or Uluwatu start on WhatsApp. The doctor decides whether an online consultation is enough or whether an examination or blood test is needed.
Are generic versions available?
Sildenafil and tadalafil are sold under several brand names in Indonesia. What matters is that the product is BPOM registered and dispensed against a prescription.
What if the tablets I bought did not work or made me feel unwell?
Stop taking them and speak to a doctor. Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, sudden changes in vision or hearing, or an erection that will not go down.
The bottom line
You can get Viagra or Cialis in Bali, and it is not difficult to do properly: see a doctor licensed in Indonesia, get assessed, and buy registered medication with a prescription. That route is the one that is legal, and the only one where you know what you are taking.
